How to choose a wedding date: a 2027 calendar for Azerbaijan

Say Cavid and Səbinə pick 27.07.2027. The numbers look great, it is summer, everyone is on holiday. Then two details surface: it is a Tuesday, and it falls in the month of Safar. The elders in the family say no, and the search starts over. To avoid that, run every candidate date through three filters: the calendar, the season and the day of the week. Below we put all three together for 2027 with concrete dates, and we checked every weekday.

When weddings are usually not held in 2027

Religious months follow the Islamic lunar calendar, which moves about 11 days earlier every year. In 2026 Muharram began on 16 June, in 2027 it starts around 6 June. The dates below are calculated: the exact days are announced by the Caucasus Muslims Board (Qafqaz Müsəlmanları İdarəsi) and can shift by one day.

• Ramadan (the month of fasting): roughly 8 February to 8 March. A wedding is not religiously forbidden then, but an evening banquet is awkward for guests who fast, and many families wait until after the holiday. Ramazan bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) falls around 9 and 10 March.
• Muharram (a month of mourning for Shia Muslims): roughly 6 June to 4 July. The most sensitive days are the first ten, and Ashura, the day of mourning for Imam Hussein, falls around 15 June. Some Baku couples do marry in this month, but in most regions of Azerbaijan weddings are not held.
• Safar (the month after Muharram): roughly 5 July to 2 August. Many families keep Safar wedding free as well, so those weddings move to August.
• 20 January (National Day of Mourning) and 26 February (Khojaly genocide remembrance day): days of remembrance, usually not chosen for weddings. In 2027, 20 January is a Wednesday and 26 February a Friday.
• 31 March (Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis): a working day, but a day of remembrance. Ask the family before booking it. In 2027 it is a Wednesday.

How strictly these customs are followed varies from family to family. The quickest route: show your shortlist of dates to the elders on both sides first, and only then to the venue. One more observation. The last weeks before Muharram are the first to sell out. In June 2026 the Baku press reported that it was almost impossible to find a free day before Muharram at most of the capital's wedding palaces. In 2027 the same rush will hit late May and the first days of June.

Public holidays: an opportunity and a risk

A long holiday makes it easy for relatives from the regions or abroad to come, since nobody needs time off work. At the same time, some city guests go travelling, and flights and hotels fill up fast. When a holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday, the day off is usually moved to the next working day, so a break can run longer than it looks.

• 1 and 2 January: New Year, a Friday and Saturday.
• 6 to 10 March: Women's Day on 8 March is a Monday, and Ramazan bayramı falls around 9 and 10 March. With the weekend, that can add up to about five days off in a row.
• Novruz (the spring new year holiday): usually 20 to 24 March. In 2027, 20 and 21 March are a Saturday and Sunday, so some of the days off will probably move to the following week.
• Qurban bayramı (Eid al-Adha): around 16 and 17 May, a Sunday and Monday. Independence Day on 28 May is a Friday, so the end of the month brings another three-day weekend.
• 15 June, National Salvation Day: in 2027 it falls on about the same day as Ashura.
• 24 to 26 September: the Formula 1 race in Baku. Some central roads close and hotels fill up. If your venue is in the city centre, check that weekend separately.
• 6 to 9 November: Victory Day on 8 November is a Monday and State Flag Day on 9 November a Tuesday. A four-day break that could become one of the most requested autumn weekends.

The official 2027 holiday list is usually approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in December. Check it before you commit, and if your date sits on a holiday weekend, tell travelling guests before anyone else.

Season: what each part of the year gives you

• Spring (April and May): mild weather, and in 2027 the easiest window after Novruz and Ramazan bayramı. Late May, the last stretch before Muharram, will go first.
• Summer (June, July, August): daytime heat in Baku often reaches around 30°C, and part of your list will be on holiday or at the dacha. In 2027 most of June and July fall in Muharram and Safar, while August opens up again.
• Autumn (September, October, November): the heat eases, people are back from holiday, and for venues this is usually the busiest season. With summer taken by the mourning months in 2027, demand for autumn will most likely rise further.
• Winter (December, January, February): free dates are easier to find, but road and weather risks grow for guests from the regions. In 2027 most of February falls in Ramadan.

In some regions weddings are traditionally held in summer, because relatives working abroad come home during the summer break. If many of your guests are in that situation, the August weeks after Safar may be your best window.

Day of the week: everyone wants Saturday

• Saturday: guests are free and can rest the next day. That makes it the most contested day for venues, singers and photographers.
• Sunday: comfortable, but Monday is a working day. Guests will want to leave earlier, so plan the evening programme with that in mind.
• Thursday and Friday: a weekday wedding is nothing unusual in Baku. Terms are easier to negotiate with the venue, but guests come straight from work, so set the start at 18:30 or 19:00.
• Monday to Wednesday: the most flexible days, a good fit for a wedding with a short guest list.

Which weekday the «pretty» 2027 dates fall on

Dates with repeating numbers get asked about every year. In 2027 the year ends in 27, which makes the «27.xx.27» pattern especially tempting. We checked each one:

• 07.07.2027: Wednesday. Falls in Safar.
• 17.07.2027: Saturday. A weekend, but still Safar.
• 27.07.2027: Tuesday, in Safar.
• 27.02.2027: Saturday. Falls in Ramadan and on the day after the Khojaly remembrance day.
• 27.08.2027: Friday. Safar is over, just factor in the August heat.
• 27.11.2027: Saturday. No fasting, no mourning, cool weather. The easiest option on this list.
• 12.12.2027: Sunday. For anyone who wants a winter wedding.

Funny enough, all three of the most talked about «sevens» dates in July fall in Safar. Saturdays like 27.11.2027, on the other hand, will be among the first to be asked for: if you like one, talk to the venue now.

How far ahead to book the venue

There is no fixed rule, a lot depends on the venue and the city. In practice, plan roughly like this:

• An autumn Saturday at a popular venue: 6 to 12 months ahead.
• The last weeks before Muharram: at least 6 months ahead.
• Weekday and winter dates: 2 to 3 months is often enough.
• Singer, band and photographer: the same week the venue is confirmed.
• Either way, get the booking in writing: date, day of the week, start and end time, approximate guest count. A spoken «we have you down» may be forgotten by everyone a few months later.

The date is set: next steps
