When to send wedding invitations: a day-by-day timeline

There is no single number that answers this. An invitation sent too early gets forgotten, and one sent late lands in a weekend the guest has already booked. Below we break the timing down by event type and by guest type.

• Engagement: 2 to 3 weeks ahead.

These windows come from the paper era and have barely changed for digital invitations. The reason is not the invitation itself, it is how guests plan.

Why 4 to 6 weeks

With less than four weeks, part of your list has already committed to something that weekend. With more than six you hit the opposite problem: the invitation is read, «there is still time» is said, and then it is forgotten. In practice five weeks gives the steadiest result.

One nuance. If the date falls on a public holiday or in the holiday season, stretch the window. People book summer travel early, so eight weeks is safer for July and August weddings.

A separate rule for guests coming from abroad

Flights and time off are planned well in advance. A two-step approach works here: announce the date two to three months ahead, then send the full invitation along with everyone else. A short message is enough for the first step, the details can wait.

This works particularly well for relatives in Russia, Turkey and Europe. Someone who knows the date can watch ticket prices, and the odds of them actually coming rise sharply.

When you have to invite at the last minute

With less than a week left, the invitation alone is not enough. Send it and follow up with a call. Without the call, a last-minute invitation often goes unread, because people put the message aside for later.

The advantage of a digital invitation here is simple: there is no printing or delivery time. On the day you decide, the invitation is already on the guest's phone. A printed invitation needs three to five days for printing alone.

Which day of the week is best

• Tuesday through Thursday: the highest open rates.
• Monday: the start of the working week, and the message gets lost in the flow.
• Saturday and Sunday: read, but answered late, since people are off.
• Between 7pm and 9pm: the window when phones get the most attention.
